Gilbert, Douglas

Dad was born Jan 31,1916 at Tunbridge Wells,England. In 1922 his family came to Canada, residing in Toronto,Ont. In the 1920's they moved to Richmond Hill,Ont. Due to the depression Dad was not able to further his education beyond public school and at age 16 found employment as a rose grower/shipper with the Bedford Park Floral company where he worked until WWII.During the war he was with the Queen's Own Rifles, stationed in England, and in 1943 met and married my mother. After the war they came to Canada and Dad resumed his career with the Bedford Park company and after a few years living in Willowdale,Oak Ridges and Aurora they moved to Richmond Hill.Later Dad worked for Mills Greenhouses in the same line of work.In the 1960's my parents started up ,owned and operated Gilbert's Variety in Richmond Hill and continued in this business until about 1970 when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and the business was sold.Dad then opened a hobby and craft store in Richmond Hill called the Activity Shop which he closed when my mother passed away in l975 and he then retired. In 1983 my father moved to Thunder Bay,Ont to live with me,his son, until his death on Jan 25,2009.Dad was a man of many talents. He was very intelligent, creative and skilled with his hands.Dads great passion was gardening for which he received recognition and awards.Dad and I were fishing buddies and he also liked to collect postage stamps for fun.Dad was a wonderful father and husband, and we did everything together. He was a very loving, caring, generous person and helped me greatly throughout his life.He will be missed by many but none more so then me as he was an inspiration,an excellent role model and a man I loved deeply.Thank you Dad .
