Gaetano Bortolotto

January 6, 1934-December 11, 1985

Born Salvatronda, Italy

Gaetano, grew up in rural Italy near Castelfranco, Veneto. He spent his early years living on a farm with his parents and eight brothers and sisters, three of whom died at an early age.

He spent one year in college taught by a Roman Catholic clergy. It was expected of him to become a priest, but he decided against it. Because he had a great interest and talent for sculpting in wood. He decided to quit college and work without pay in exchange for the knowledge of how to make furniture.

After his father died. the family decided to move to Canada to be reunited with the oldest son, Severino. On May 3 1951 they landed in Nova Scotia by boat , and on May 5 they arrived in Hamilton, where Gaetano would spend the rest of his life, with the exception of two years in Montreal.

Known as Guy to many. he worked as a carpenter for all of his time in Canada. He built single family homes and furniture. At the age of 45, he started a company called Guymar Construction.

He married Maria Martino on October 27, 1956 and together they had three children , Robert, Tania and Denise. His interests included soccer and hockey. He was a member of the Venetian Club of Hamilton.

He is laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Burlington, Canada
